$5,560 towards $5,700

Hi! My name is Favianna. I love learning, traveling, trying new things, and pushing myself outside of my comfort zone. These are some of the reasons I applied to be a part of Cinnamongirl’s traveling cohort ‘Travelgirl’.

Cinnamongirl is an organization that helps girls of color come together and learn from each other and our cohort mentors. Cinnamongirl achieves this by encouraging girls to self lead their Travelgirl experience. Some of these self-lead projects include: creating fundraising pages, passion projects, travel blogs, and travel journals! This aspect of Travelgirl is especially empowering because we get to expand our skill set and push our boundaries with the help of a cohort of brilliant leaders. This opportunity means a lot to me because I will get to travel with girls and mentors that look like me.

I have a passion for traveling and love any chance to expand my knowledge. Last year, I was lucky enough to be able to go to Portugal and learn tons about their role in slavery. Before my trip, I knew very little about their role as the first European nation to play a significant part in the African slave trade. But after the trip I gained a completely new understanding. This is an example of how traveling and learning has changed me. For this reason, the opportunity to take part in this program is very important to me.

Previous Travelgirl cohorts have traveled to; Senegal, The South, Mexico, Australia, Washington, D.C., and Japan. Next summer, my cohort will be traveling to Peru!

Additionally, more than 60% of Peru is covered by tropical forests,197.2 million acres of that is made up of the Amazon Rainforest. The Amazon Rainforest is home to over 3 million species of animals and 2,500 species of trees. The Amazon Rainforest is considered to be one of the most important locations when talking about global climate change, and some call it the lungs of the planet. So on my trip, I am eager to dive deeper into the global climate change and deforestation issues and effects in the Amazon Rainforest. Another aspect of Peru that I’m particularly interested in learning more about is how the Indigenous groups and culture was impacted by Spanish colonialism and the break away from the Spanish empire. Some of the Indigenous groups of Peru include the Incas and the Quechua. I’d love to gain a deeper understanding of the current lives of the Indigenous tribes in Peru.

This trip to Peru will provide me with a lifetime of memories and long-lasting friendships, but it won’t be possible without your help! My fundraising goal is $5,700. This money will cover my transportation fees, meals, excursions, and housing for my trip. Any amount contributed will be extremely appreciated and helpful!

Thank you for your support,

Favianna
