Hi, my name is Malia Reed, a 16 year old girl from Oakland, CA. I am a junior at Bishop O’Dowd High School, and I am fundraising so that I can travel with my Cinnamongirl cohort to Cartagena, Colombia in the summer of 2020.
Going on this trip would be the first time that I’ve ever been out of the country. I believe that going with my cohort will be an unparalleled experience. When I graduate high school I am going to pursue a career in social work. Social injustices are things that go against the moral code of a decent society. I know I have a lot to offer, and I am willing to learn. I am committed to bring about change in this world! I know that going on the trip to Colombia will be a very humbling experience. Often times, basic necessities that I am granted here in the U.S. get taken for granted. In other parts of the world, people do not always possess their basic needs.
Throughout these past three years, my volunteer work has reached a new level. Through church and school, I have been able to cater to those populations who are not as fortunate as me. These include the homeless populations, the elderly, and disadvantaged youth. Meeting different people from all walks of life has allowed me to fall in love with helping others.
Growing up, I have never truly experienced the afro-latino culture. I myself am an afro-latino. I am ¾ African American and ¼ Mexican. These two powerful cultures have helped shape who I am today. Knowing that Cartagena, Colombia was a stop on the transatlantic slave trading route compels me to want to know more. More about afro-latino culture, and be able to see it first hand. With the help of your donation, I will be able to go on this trip and see the effects of the slave trade outside of America. I also will take the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the lifestyle that the natives live. Finally, I am going to see people I share a piece of culture with, without even being related by blood. Just a small donation or words of encouragement will go a long way to helping me meet my goal for CINNAMONGIRL INC.
