Hello, this is Laila! I am in my senior year of high school and part of the Social Justice Academy at San Leandro High School. As a Social Justice Advocate/Activist, I am committed to working towards gaining a deeper understanding of the racial and social inequities that affect my community and communities abroad.
I am really excited to share that I’ve been accepted into a very special program called Cinnamongirl, Inc. Cinnamongirl, Inc. is committed to building up a girl’s sense of pride, understanding, and determination - Cinnamongirls are the new pipeline of leaders, we are destined for greatness!
I was chosen to be one of ten dynamic girls that will travel to Cartagena, Colombia in June of 2020. In preparation for this trip, me and my cohort will meet monthly to properly prepare ourselves, get to know one another, and study the Palenque culture.
This will be my first trip outside of the US and I am super excited! I know that this trip will afford me amazing networking opportunities with other extraordinary girls in Cartagena and I will make new friends. While in Cartagena, I’ll be immersed in Afro-Colombian culture, have the opportunity to hone my Spanish language skills, develop a different cultural perspective, eat new foods, experience new customs and traditions and develop my own sense of independence. I am looking forward to broadening my knowledge about the slave trade in Colombia and spend time San Basilio de Palenque - the first free slave town in the Americas. As a socially-conscious young woman of color, it is important for me to understand and explore various racial and cultural inequities that this community and other communities were built on.
The total cost for me is $4,500. Each Cinnamongirl is responsible for raising the cost of their trip, therefore, I am asking you to support me with my fundraising efforts. Any amount is very much appreciated. When I return from Cartagena, I will share my trip with you through a passion project which will be a montage of photographs, Colombian music and reflections from my travel journal.
